Mixed bushveld and thickets. Above dark brown; breast grey-brown; belly tawny; white arrow marks all over; eyes orange with red eye-rings; bill and legs black.

Forests. Dark brown above including surround of facial disc; finely barred brown on whitish underparts; no ‘ear’ tufts.

Mixed bushveld. Woodbark camouflage; very mottled grey-brown colour, with flecks of white and black; small ear tufts.

Wetlands. Wings dark brown; belly chestnut-brown; head, breast and mantle white; cere and legs yellow.

Moist grasslands. Dark brown above with small white spots; creamy below with small brown spots; no ‘ear’ tufts.

Woodland. Dark brown above; white below with dark breast-streaks; eyes, cere and feet yellow. Underwing shows white ‘windows’; tail with black terminal band.
