Thickets. Above plain dark brown except for rusty cap; below blue-grey (southern and eastern regions); buffy elsewhere

Karoo scrub. Dark brown above; white below with buffy wash to flanks and vent; breast lightly spotted.

Rocky regions. Above dark brown to breast; wings with white spots; secondaries and outer tail feathers white; lower breast to vent white; bill red.

Vleis and marshes. Dark brown above (with small ‘ear’ tufts); pale buff below; wings show chestnut in flight.

Acacia thornveld. Dark brown above; clear white below; soft parts black.

Wetlands. Small waterbird; dark brown above, pale below; when breeding plumage has chestnut face and neck, and creamy spot at base of bill.

Dense vegetation over water. Dark brown above with rounded tail; noticeable eye-stripe; faint markings on upper breast.

Reedbeds and water side grass. Dark brown above with black; pale below; face, flanks and breast washed rufous.

Game regions. Dark brown eagle with closely feathered legs; immature with white spots on folded wings. Cere and feet yellow.
