Description

Common resident. Told by dark upper parts, broad and rounded tail, definite eye-stripe plus faint markings on the upper breast. Call is a loud, accelerating, distinctive ‘cruk, cruk, cruk, cruk-cruk-cruk-crukcrukcrukcruk’, like a stick drawn across a railing, followed by wing-snapping. Occurs singly or in pairs in dense vegetation over water. Secretive, mostly in the lower stratum.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds of mostly sombre colouring. Many have attractive warbling songs and short calls that aid identification to the practised ear, but sound confusingly similar to the inexperienced. Several species visit southern Africa from Europe during summer. Sexes are alike.
