Description

Common, near-endemic resident. Differs from similar flycatchers in white underparts contrasting strongly with brown upper parts. Immature is spotted whitish above, streaked dark on white below – this streaking heavier than in immature of [Chat Flycatcher]. Call is a soft, sparrow-like ‘chew-week’. Frequents Acacia thornveld. Perches prominently on the outer branch of a bush, from where it watches the ground for insects, occasionally hawking them in the air.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds with prominent bristles protruding from the base of their bills. Many of the soberly coloured species catch insects on the ground or in flight after watching from a low perch; others, especially the colourful and ornate species, are leaf-gleaners, but also hawk insects in short aerial sallies.
