Mixed woodland. Red bill in both sexes; male blackish-brown, wing feather edges white, female paler on breast.

Bushveld. Buff and dark brown upperparts; pale underparts. Distinctive rattle at end of song; often sings from top of bush.

Karoo, roadsides. Very dark brown with white underbelly and vent; eyes whitish; gape orange.

Broad-leaved woodland. Dull grey-brown overall; paler on throat; soft parts black; eye-rings pale.

Montane forests and gardens. Dark, olive-brown above; throat speckled black on white; underparts orange (highveld race with brown breast); vent white or dusky; bill and legs orange-yellow.
