Description
Common resident. Slightly larger and more dumpy than [Pearl-spotted Owlet]. upper parts are finely barred; wings have a row of bold white spots reaching the shoulder, and underparts are white with brown spots arranged in rows. The call is an urgent ‘kerrooo-kerrooo-krrooo-krrooo-krrooo-krrooo- krrooo…’ or ‘krrooo-trrooo, krrooo-trrooo…’ repeated many times. Found mostly in well-developed riverine forests and large-tree woodland fringing lakes; also in mixed bushveld where it spends the day roosting in dense thickets. Less often seen by day than [Pearl-spotted Owlet].

Nocturnal, erect-standing birds of prey characterised by large, rounded heads, large forward-facing eyes set in a flattened face and feathered legs (except for Pel's Fishing-Owl). Some have feather adornments on their heads that resemble ears, but they are not used for hearing. Immatures are usually darker and fluffier than adults.
