Regional Status: Endemic

Wide ranging. Mature birds have wings and body feathers very pale brown; flight feathers and tail black; neck skin blue-grey; eyes honey-coloured.

Fynbos. Large, dark francolin; dark brown above with feathers edged pale buff; black below; feathers streaked white; legs reddish.

Cape mountain slopes. Dark brown above with streaky crown; dull yellow below; female has streaky breast.

Rocky slopes and cliffs. Both sexes have rufous underparts, rump and tail; male with rufous mantle, grey head and neck; female speckled brown above.

Long grass and braken hillsides. Rusty cap and straggle tail feathers

Grasslands. Orange throat with black border; underparts yellow; above grey-brown.

Coastal bush. Dark brown head and breast; white eye-rings; yellow vent.

General. Grey nape and mantle; rest yellow; greenish wings with feathers edged yellow.

Rocky grassland. Male has striking black and pale buff plumage; lively, demonstrative behaviour.

Grasslands, vleis. All blue-grey except white crown, black wing-feathers. Bill yellowish.
