Description

Common endemic resident. Differs from [Moustached Grass Warbler] in heavily marked upper parts, streaked underparts (except race (b) of eastern regions) and generally rusty coloration; from cisticolas in larger size, black malar streaks and long, rufous tail with tapering, straggly feathers. Has a distinctive burst of song ‘chirp-chirp-chirp does it tickle yoooou’, plus a cat-like mewing like [Cape Longclaw]. Frequents the long grass and bracken of hillsides and open streams away from hills. Occasionally perches prominently on some tall grass or weed; otherwise skulks within the vegetation.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds of mostly sombre colouring. Many have attractive warbling songs and short calls that aid identification to the practised ear, but sound confusingly similar to the inexperienced. Several species visit southern Africa from Europe during summer. Sexes are alike.
