Broad-leaved woodland. Dull grey-brown overall; paler on throat; soft parts black; eye-rings pale.


Karoo, semi-desert. Pale grey above; secondaries and rump white; primaries and tail black; chest grey; belly finely barred. Cere and legs coral-red.

Woodland. Above grey, below banded grey to throat; eyes dark; cere red, legs orange.

Thickets. Red forehead, bill, throat, rump and upper tail; olive-green back; orange-edged wings.

Bushveld. Grey cap and mantle; olive-green wings and upper tail; below yellow with orange breast-patch.

Riverine bush. Dark brown above with black streaking; speckled black and white below; bill red and yellow; legs red.

Thickets. Above plain dark brown except for rusty cap; below blue-grey (southern and eastern regions); buffy elsewhere

Forests. Glossy-green head, breast and upperparts; scarlet-red below. Female lacks green breast; bill greenish-yellow.
