Widespread. Dark brown above with prominent ‘ear’ tufts; dark border to facial disc; below finely barred and blotched with dark brown, white and buff; eyes yellow.

Woodland. Dark grey-brown above, crown streaked dark; below whitish; breast and flanks indistinctly streaked brown; soft parts black.

Bush and suburbia. Brown wings and upper tail; light brown crested head and underparts; mask and upper mandible black; lower mandible white; legs black.

Cliffs. Streaked neck; wings and upper body rufous; wings with white spots.
