Description

Common resident. The only red-necked francolin with black legs and black bill. Basic plumage colour uniform; cf. [Red-necked Spurfowl]. Utters a harsh crowing ‘krrraaak-krrraaak-krrraaak…’ fading at the end. Male calls from a low branch or anthill. Occurs singly or in small coveys in bushveld, woodland and fallow agricultural lands, usually not far from water.

Bird Family

Terrestrial birds of mostly gregarious habits (quails excepted). Their crowing or cackling calls are useful identification features. Immatures resemble adults but are usually duller. Quails are nomadic and irruptive, whereas francolins are more sedentary.
