Arid areas. Light cinnamon-brown with greyish neck, black throat patch and plain head.

Karoo scrub. Eastern race grey. Namibian race has pale brown upperparts, pale brown breast, white belly and vent; pale brown rump and white outer tail feathers.

Scrublands and desert. Bill and legs white. Black head with white ear-patch all feathers broadly edged white; belly black.

Various dry habitats. Black-and-white streaked head; rufous wings, crown, mantle; below washed grey-brown.
