Dry bush. Eyebrows, cheeks and underparts yellow; upperparts olive-green,paler in W, darkest in SE.

Arid plains. Southern race is light grey-brown above; Namibian race very pale brown, almost white above; both races white below; rump buff or white.

Grasslands and Karoo scrub. Dark brown above with rufous-edged wing feathers and pale chestnut rump; off-white below with dusky breast.

Arid woodland and gardens. Only throat and vent yellow with flanks washed cinnamon yellow plumage.

Desert. Longer, pointed tail than other sandgrouse; female has dense barring all over, apart from throat and underbelly. Both sexes have ochre heads and flock at waterholes mainly in morning.

Karoo and Namib plains. Black and white on folded wing. Dark foreneck and white belly.

Bushveld. Tailless appearance, grey above and variable burnt orange below.

Dry regions. Light brown above with buffy feather edges; pale eyebrows; below pale cinnamon-brown.
