Description

Locally common. This species differs from [Cape White-Eye] in being paler overall, especially the underparts. Only the throat and vent are pale yellow, while the flanks are washed a light cinnamon-orange. The song is similar to that of Cape White-Eye but of higher pitch; call very different and diagnostic: a harsh ‘chirrit’. Replaces [Cape White-Eye] over much of the arid western parts of the subregion. Often abundant in rural towns.

Bird Family

Very small yellow-green birds that glean insects from leaves and probe flowers for nectar. Unless breeding, they occur in flocks that go from tree to tree where they search the foliage closely, frequently in an inverted position. They are named for the ring of small, stiff white feathers surrounding their eyes, often mistaken for a skin-wattle. Immatures are duller and initially lack white eye-surround.
