Description

Common, near-endemic resident. Distinguished from all brown canaries except [Black-throated Canary] by yellow rump. Palest birds with brightest rump occur in Namibia (b); darkest with greenish-yellow rump occur in south (a), with intergrading elsewhere. Distinguished from [Black-throated Canary] by white throat; could also be mistaken for smaller female Yellow Canary. Has a strong, tuneful song ‘weetle, weetle, frrra, weetle, frree, tee, chipchipchipchip…’. Occurs singly or in small flocks in dry thornveld, Karoo, desert and coastal dunes, generally not far from water.
