Coastal and river shores. Sandy-brown above; male with darker forecrown; white below and on forehead.

Rivers sandbanks of major rivers.. Lateral head and neck grey; crown and underparts white; wings black and white; bill, wattles, legs yellow.

Game regions. Grey-brown above and below; back white; flight feathers, neck skin and soft parts black.

Dry bush and suburbia. Grey above with upstanding crest; buff und.erparts; back white; bill white with black tip and legs red

Near water. Buffy with dark streaks; dark moustachial stripe; distinctive grey wing bar edged black.

Arid plains. Southern race is light grey-brown above; Namibian race very pale brown, almost white above; both races white below; rump buff or white.

Woodland. Various colour forms: light brown, tawny and gingery-brown. Tawny form only has black dappling on upperwing covert; all have black flight feathers and tail; cere and legs yellow.
