Wetlands. Light brown above with white and black bands around head and throat; belly white; breast buff.

Arid areas. Light cinnamon-brown with greyish neck, black throat patch and plain head.

Karoo scrub. Eastern race grey. Namibian race has pale brown upperparts, pale brown breast, white belly and vent; pale brown rump and white outer tail feathers.

Arid, rocky ground. Above light brown; rump and outer tail feathers rufous; below white faintly streaked brown; white eyebrow above black facial mask.

Eastern mountain slopes with proteas and aloes. Rufous breast and cap.

Upland forest fringes. Similar to Southern Double-collared Sunbird (below), but bill longer than head.

Grassland. Brown upperparts; rufous head and wing edges; streaked back. Distinctive spurts of territorial wing-clapping in flight when breeding.

Dry veld. Crown black with encircling white band; upperparts, neck and breast light brown; belly white; eyes yellow; bill and legs red.

Bushveld. Rufous brown above with black-and-white facial marks; well-spotted light brown breast; red legs.
