Description

Common, near-endemic resident. Very similar to [Pale Flycatcher] but larger, pale wing edges more prominent. Their ranges are mutually exclusive. Also often mistaken for [Familiar Chat], but lacks that species’ rufous tail. Immature heavily speckled. The song is a warbled ‘cher cher chirrup’ with some hissing notes. Perches prominently on a bush, post or wire, from where it flies to the ground to seize insects. Often occurs in pairs or small parties. A bird of the Kalahari and Karoo, common on roadside telephone wires.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds with prominent bristles protruding from the base of their bills. Many of the soberly coloured species catch insects on the ground or in flight after watching from a low perch; others, especially the colourful and ornate species, are leaf-gleaners, but also hawk insects in short aerial sallies.
