Grassveld. Grey head (white forehead), neck and upper breast; above brown, below white.

Wetlands. Grey upperwings and tail; crown and back black; body white; legs yellow.

Zimbabwe thornveld. Mantle and underparts grey; cap, throat, central belly and tail black.

Coastal. Found in winter in non-breeding plumage. Grey above, white below. Antarctic Tern is larger than Common Tern with dark red bill. .

Grasslands. Both sexes grey above; male pale grey below (rufous vent); female white, well spotted. Soft parts red or orange.

Reedbeds. Lateral head and underparts grey; upperparts rufous; bill, legs red.

Woodland and suburbia. Deep blue-grey crested head grades to grey breast; upperparts and tail chestnut-brown; orbital ring and bill blue.
