Description

Fairly common visitor and resident. Differs from [Senegal Lapwing] in white forehead extending to above the eye, a bright red eye-ring, a broad dark band on the lower breast and dark red legs. upper wing and underwing patterns diagnostic (see illustration). The normal call is a harsh ‘tlu-wit’, the alarm call a shrill ‘che-che-che-cherek’, rising to a scream when highly agitated. Usually in flocks in hilly grassland, and on golf courses and playing fields where grass is short.

Bird Family

Long-legged terrestrial birds with characteristically black, white and brown colouring. Usually found in pairs or small groups, favouring short grassland areas never far from fresh water. Lapwings breed during the winter season, laying their well camouflaged eggs into a shallow scrape on the ground, which they aggressively and noisily defend from humans and other predators.
