Bushveld vleis. Breeding male. Red collar often difficult to see unless bird is perched.

Wetlands. Red bill; dark brown hood and upperparts; all feathers edged creamy; neck dusky; underparts white; all feathers with dark centres.

Wetlands. Adult has red-brown neck; young birds mostly light brown; below white.

Inland waters. Non-breeding bird has grey wings. Paler when breeding.

All waters. Pied with stout black bill. Hovers over water before plunging.

Wetlands. Entirely pied waterbird. Told by black, upturned bill; legs white.

Bushveld with large flowing rivers. Cinnamon underparts with Rufous upperparts. Black eyes.
Inland waters and coastal lagoons. Dark above with facial mask; white below. White legs; long wings.

Reedbeds. Yellow below with barred flanks; male with red mask, breast-patch and vent; above grey-brown.
