Rivers sandbanks of major rivers.. Lateral head and neck grey; crown and underparts white; wings black and white; bill, wattles, legs yellow.

Inland and coastal waters. Upperwings and tail dark brown; wing feathers edged black.

Thickets. Black crown grades onto rufous mantle and wings; white eyebrow; white streaking from head to mantle.

Inland rivers. Rufous neck and mantle; black cap; yellow facial skin and legs. Feeds at night

Secluded wetlands. Head and neck buff but densely spotted black (darkest on crown); a white spot at base of black bill; rest of upperparts spotted and barred dark brown; rufous and white.

Wetland edges. Below yellow; above green-grey; various head patterns.

Inland waters. Non-breeding bird has pale grey upper tail and black line behind eye to black nape.

Pastures and mixed grasslands. All white except in summer when buff on head, neck and back. Bill, legs yellow to pink.

Grasslands, floodplains. Crown, back and wings grey; head, neck, mantle and below white. Bill yellow; wattles deep red.
