Open country. Plumage variable, dark brown to red-brown; darkest above; streaked and banded below.

Palm savanna. Rufous upperparts and vent; black collar to creamy throat; grey flanks.

Woodland. Greyish bird with well-streaked breast, pale eyes and rufous vent.


Arid Namibian and Botswana thornveld.Breeding male chestnut back and black head.


General. Male yellow all over; darker above; orange wash over head and throat; pale eyes. Female paler; yellow wash over head and breast; eyes dark; belly white.
