Karoo and grasslands. Heavily market lark with short tail and heavy bill with yellow base.

Thornveld. Predominantly rufous above, including rump and tail coverts; whitish below.

Human settlements. Crown grey; nape dark brown grading into chestnut back and wings; small white wing-bar; lores to bib black.

Pond fringes. Rufous from above the eyes to nape and breast; olive-green back; white on central crown, eye-stripe and shoulders; legs yellow.

Grasslands. Entirely rufous upperparts and body; white underwings and undertail.

Dry thornveld. Grey crown; chestnut nape, back and wings with small white wing-bar; male only with conspicuous black bib.

Inland waters. Large black-and-white kingfisher; male with rufous breast; female with rufous belly; bill black.
