Description

Very common resident. An introduced species. Male distinguished by grey cap and variable black bib; cf. larger, brighter [Great Sparrow]. Female and immature are paler, bill and legs pink. The call is ‘chissip’ or ‘chee-ip’. Pairs and small parties occur in association with human habitation, breeding under the eaves of houses. Found in most towns and small settlements, even isolated permanent camps. Distribution patchy but widespread.
