Inland waters. Tawny bill with gap between mandibles.

Lowland rivers. Small pied bird with bobbing tail.

Wetlands. Wings dark brown; belly chestnut-brown; head, breast and mantle white; cere and legs yellow.

Rivers. Dark brown with white-spotted upperparts; bill grey; legs orange.

Reedbeds. Dark mottled upperparts; grey below with mottled rump.

Inland waters. Front of neck rufous; crown and body very dark brown; front of neck sandy in female.

Quiet rivers. Above dark brown (grey in male); bill and legs bright red.
