African Finfoot

Uncommon resident. Differs from ducks and cormorants in bright orange-red bill and legs. Has no characteristic call, but sometimes utters a harsh croaking sound. Found singly or in pairs on quiet, tree-fringed rivers where it swims quietly beneath the overhanging branches. Swims with much of the body submerged, head and neck stretched forward with each foot-stroke. Shy and retiring. If disturbed, flies low across the water and paddles with its feet, making a distinctive splashing sound. Seldom flies. Roosts at night over water on a low, overhanging branch.
