Thornveld. Predominantly rufous above, including rump and tail coverts; whitish below.


Bushveld. Head, underparts and rump pinkish-red; upperparts brown washed pinkish-red; bill blue-black.

Acacia thornveld. Brown above with yellow flight-feather edges; below yellow.

Game regions. Dark brown at all ages; adults have white legs, thighs, pectoral feathers and downy hood; neck and facial skin pink; bill slender.


Riverine woodland. Upperparts and breast dark brown; all feathers fringed white; rump, belly and vent white; eyes yellow with red eye-rings.

Woodland. Dark grey-brown above; below white with bold black facial markings and spots; bill black above and orange below; legs pale orange.

Mixed woodland. Back, tail and wings royal blue; wing coverts black; head and mantle grey; belly chestnut; bill red.
