Vleis. Mainly black upperparts; white rump and half-collar; underparts rufous.

Okavango,Zambezi Valley and around Kruger. Large red bill; short red legs; body white, upperwings dark. Skims water, bill immersed.



Thornveld. Dark grey upperparts and bill; mottled brown wings. Distinctive eyebrow stripe and cream patch on bill. Most vocal.

Woodland. Above black with yellow markings; red forehead; black throat on white underparts.
