Desert plains. Light brown upperparts; white below; pale grey head and neck with black-and-white markings.

Bushveld. Well-streaked dark grey and buff upperparts, distinctive white eyebrow, and pale outer tail feathers.

Woodland. Back, underbelly and vent deep blue, rest of body and wings dark brown.

Grassland with bush. Eastern race with rufous crest and wings; body washed rufous; pale western race with rufous on wings only.

Open woodland. Underbody and underwing coverts rufous; dark above; eyes and legs yellow.

Dry scrub veld. Rufous mask and ear coverts; black breast-band on white underparts; erect tail.

Wetlands. Very dark small heron; rich rufous below and on wings. Bill and legs normally yellow.

Wetlands. Orange legs in adult, dark in immature. Head and rear of neck dappled light brown; back and wings dark brown; all feathers boldly edged white; below white.
