Description

Fairly common, localised resident of the southern and eastern regions. All-rufous bodied sparrowhawk with a 4-barred tail and finely barred underwing and very dark upper parts. In flight rufous underwing coverts. Could be mistaken for immature [Ovambo Sparrowhawk], but top of head and upper parts generally much darker. Yellow eye, cere and legs. Call is a shrill ‘kee-kee-kee..’ Occurs singly in stands of exotic trees and forest patches in montane grassland or fynbos. Often hunts over grassland by flying through cover, surprising small birds. Feeds on small birds, reptiles and insects. Nesting in montane forest and exotic plantations. 200 g.
