Lowland forests. A large sunbird. Dull olive-green, darker above, paler below.

Montane forests and gardens. Dark, olive-brown above; throat speckled black on white; underparts orange (highveld race with brown breast); vent white or dusky; bill and legs orange-yellow.

Forest thickets. Cinnamon yellow breast patch, grey cap, and olive-green upper parts.

Karoo scrub. Dark brown above; white below with buffy wash to flanks and vent; breast lightly spotted.

Coastal shores, found in summer in non-breeding plumage. Grey upperbody apart from mottled black cap with white forehead. In non-breeding black legs and bill, in breeding yellow.

Forest. Folded wings and upper tail iridescent blue; rest of body green; wings red in flight.

Coastal bush. Male with red cap and moustachial streak; female with black cap and red nape; both well spotted below.
