Forests. Small, secretive. Head, nape and upper breast chestnut; buff spots on dark back.

Thickets. Rufous wings; black cap and tail; faint barring on upper-tail coverts; underparts white.

Thornveld thickets. Grey-brown crown and mantle; black border to crown; chestnut wings.

Montane cliffs. Black mask and beard on white face; rest of body ginger-brown; wings and tail dark brown; eyes pale yellow and red; feet whitish.

Well wooded rocky outcrops. Dark back and white front; female has black head; rufous tail conspicuous; seldom flaps.

Lily pans. Rufous-bodied waterbird with long legs and toes; head and neck black above, white below.
