Description

Common resident. Told from [Southern Tchagra] and [Brown-crowned Tchagra] by black crown. Immature has a blackish-brown crown and horn-coloured bill. Has a ‘krok-krok-krokrakror’ alarm note and a loud, ponderous and rather flat-sounding whistled series ‘cheer-tcharee, trichi cheer-tcharoo, cheeroo, cheeroo’. Pairs also duet with a variety of grating, churring and whistling calls. Occurs singly or in pairs in thornveld, woodland, coastal bush and plantations, where it frequents the lower stratum.
