Widespread. Female has grey head and mantle. Both sexes show brick-red wings in flight.

Bushveld. Three almost identical species when breeding. When breeding, a variation between a whitish bill and reddish leg colours distinguish the species.(1) Red bill red leg; (2) whitish bill white leg; (3) Whiteish bill red leg.

Rocky regions in the west. Has orange eyes and white wing-panels with an orange tinge. Often in small flocks.

Mixed woodland. Tail shorter in female. Both sexes have white wing-stripe.

Acacia thornveld. Breeding male. Creamy-buff nape and underparts; rufous breast.

Common in towns. Nesting under bridges. Square tail. Large white patch on rump visible from side. Quite noisy “chittering” in flight.
