Coastal and river shores. Sandy-brown above; male with darker forecrown; white below and on forehead.

Game regions. Dark brown back, wings and upper breast; crown, nape and below white (female has white inner secondaries); bare parts pink; bill blue and red.

Riverine woodland. Red throat, back, wings and upper tail green; forehead and chin white; nape and breast cinnamon; belly to vent blue.

Wetlands. White face on black head; rufous neck and upper breast.

Rivers sandbanks of major rivers.. Lateral head and neck grey; crown and underparts white; wings black and white; bill, wattles, legs yellow.

Coastal forest fringes. Dark brown with white ear-stripes and underbelly.

Bushveld. Pied with grey crown; orange-yellow eye-wattles and legs.

Thornveld. Dark brown above with white eyebrows, wing-bars and feather edges; below white, with or without spotted breast; bill black; legs pink.
