Broad-leaved & acacia bushveld. Forked tail diagnostic. Ruby-red eye, noisy and conspicuous.

Woodland. Male black and white, female brown and white.

Grassland. Brown upperparts; rufous head and wing edges; streaked back. Distinctive spurts of territorial wing-clapping in flight when breeding.

Karoo. Grey cap and upper body; black tail; mask and black wings with white bar; pink central breast.

Rocky ground and farmyards. Dark brown above, slightly paler below, rump rich chestnut-brown, tail same with black tip and central feathers.

Reedbeds and marshy areas. Breeding male. Red shoulder retained
all year.

Aerial. Forehead and underbody blue; throat yellow; upperparts chestnut and green.

Woodland. Dark brown above with greyish head; below variable: dark brown, spotted brown on white or buff (immature); underwings well barred.

Woodland. Entirely yellow except for black wings, tail feathers and lores; bill pink.

Light woodland. Dark above; heavily streaked below with rufous thighs.
