Description

Common endemic resident. Differs from [Southern (Common) Fiscal] in less robust bill and prominent white ‘windows’ in the tail; the white wing-bar extends only halfway along the folded wing, not to the shoulder. Female’s plumage is duller grey-brown (not black, as in male). Has a sibilant, rather weak song ‘swee-swee-ur’ and other similar sounds, often in prolonged sequence. Usually occurs in pairs in bush country, grassy Karoo, fynbos and suburbia. Perches prominently on a branch or post and flies to the ground to seize insects.

Bird Family

Small, insectivorous birds with prominent bristles protruding from the base of their bills. Many of the soberly coloured species catch insects on the ground or in flight after watching from a low perch; others, especially the colourful and ornate species, are leaf-gleaners, but also hawk insects in short aerial sallies.
