Coastal shores. White body apart from black cap, pale grey back and wings; long, slender black bill with yellow tip.

Shorelines. Chestnut above with black and white about head, neck and breast; white below.

Tidal flats. Bill, legs black. Above mottled light grey-brown and white; eyebrows and forehead white; below white; breast streaked light grey-brown; in flight ‘armpits’ black

Grasslands. Entirely rufous upperparts and body; white underwings and undertail.

Coastal lagoons. Large shorebird with long, black, down-curved bill. Dark brown crown with central white stripe; above dark brown mottled white; below white, streaked brown on breast and flanks.

Tidal waters. Very large shorebird with very long, down-curved bill; head, mantle and breast buff, well streaked dark brown with buffy-white feather edges; wing feathers edged white; underbelly white.
