Dry grasslands. Legs dull yellow. Above dark grey-brown, mottled black with white streaks; head rufous, black and white; throat white; below rufous (paler in west) spotted and dappled red-brown.

Desert. Longer, pointed tail than other sandgrouse; female has dense barring all over, apart from throat and underbelly. Both sexes have ochre heads and flock at waterholes mainly in morning.

Wetlands. Above sandy-brown with white feather edges and back; below white, slender black bill; long yellow-green legs.

Grassy hills. Black bill; yellow legs. Upperparts tawny barred black and streaked white; head markings rufous; throat white well spotted black; below grey.

Coastal lagoons. Large shorebird with long, black, down-curved bill. Dark brown crown with central white stripe; above dark brown mottled white; below white, streaked brown on breast and flanks.

Tidal waters. Very large shorebird with very long, down-curved bill; head, mantle and breast buff, well streaked dark brown with buffy-white feather edges; wing feathers edged white; underbelly white.

BBroad-leaved woodland. Usually in pairs. Female almost completely speckled. Male has distinctive white and black band on breast. White spots on back.

Grasslands. Above rufous, mottled and streaked black and white; head with white markings; throat dark; below pale rufous; flanks streaked white.

Brackish pans. Pale duck with pink bill. Above dark brown; feathers edged creamy; head and below white,
well spotted dark brown.

Wetlands. Large drab duck. Black, broad-tipped bill; orange-yellow legs; speckled all over dark brown on pale grey. Male has paler head. In flight, shows pale blue-green on upper wings.
