Grassveld, bushveld. Black and white with red bill and legs. Seen in large flocks or small groups in summer.

Secluded wetlands. Head and neck buff but densely spotted black (darkest on crown); a white spot at base of black bill; rest of upperparts spotted and barred dark brown; rufous and white.

Wetland edges. Below yellow; above green-grey; various head patterns.

Inland waters. Non-breeding bird has pale grey upper tail and black line behind eye to black nape.

Pastures and mixed grasslands. All white except in summer when buff on head, neck and back. Bill, legs yellow to pink.
