Coastal bush. Male with red cap and moustachial streak; female with black cap and red nape; both well spotted below.

Bushveld. Head, underparts and rump pinkish-red; upperparts brown washed pinkish-red; bill blue-black.

Mixed bush. Red chin and throat; bold black breast-band; yellow belly

Woodland. Male with red cap and moustachial streak; female with red nape only; streaked black below.

Reedbeds and marshy areas. Breeding male. Red shoulder retained
all year.
