Description

Common resident. Differs from [Mourning Collared Dove] in having grey on top of the head only, red eye with a purple-pink eye-ring, and a deeper pink breast. The call is ‘coo-coo, coo-koo-cuk-coo’, the accent on the fourth syllable, likened to ‘I am, a RED-eyed dove’. Occurs in riverine forest, well developed woodland, mixed bushveld, exotic plantations and suburban areas. The largest of the ring-necked doves.

Bird Family

A well-known group of mostly seed-eating, terrestrial (except for the arboreal fruit-feeding pigeons) birds that build flimsy stick platform nests in trees. The distinction between pigeons and doves is ill-defined: larger species tend to be called pigeons, smaller ones doves. Immatures are dull versions of the adults. Many species become very common and tame near human habitation.
