Widespread. Female has grey head and mantle. Both sexes show brick-red wings in flight.

Woodland. Above speckled brown and black; below rufous throat and upper breast on creamy-white.

Grassy hills. Legs dull yellow. Above dark brown, blotched black and streaked white; ear coverts and lateral neck rufous; throat white; upper breast mottled black and white; underparts pale rufous streaked red-brown.

Dense bush. Red head (not crown), throat breast and rump. Below black with white spots.

Dense bush. Eastern races are dark brown above, streaked black; below black streaked white; all bare parts red.

Lowland forests. Black-and-white above with yellow wing-feather edges; red forehead; pale yellow below.
