Description

Fairly common resident. Breeding male has red head and mantle; female recognised by bright yellow head contrasting with white belly, and pointed salmon-coloured bill. Non-breeding male and immature like female. Small illustration (a) shows male in transitional plumage. Normally silent but utters a squeaky chattering at the nest and high-pitched calls while foraging. Pairs or males with several females occur in broad-leaved woodland, breeding in isolation. Nomadic when not breeding.
