Description

Fairly common resident. Identified by boldface pattern, including white eyebrows bordered by black lines, plus white throat with black malar streak. Breast and flanks are a dull creamy orange, colour extending to the rump. Immature more mottled. The song is loud and clear, a series of pleasant phrases repeated three or four times with short pauses ‘pee-pee-pee, terr-treee, chiroo-chiroo-chiroo, witchoo-witchoo-witchoo, pee-pee pee-pee, chu-it, chu-it, chu-it…’, some phrases rising in volume; also imitates other bird calls. Usually occurs singly in broad-leaved and riverine woodland. Largely terrestrial unless singing.
