Wetlands. Grey wings and back. Grey-white body, black band on head; yellow bill and legs.

Forest fringes. Dark grey all over; flight feathers, tail and soft parts black.

Woodland. Upperparts green-grey; yellow-edged flight feathers; slender bill.

Thorn thickets. Yellow-green mantle and wings; red bill (red forehead and throat in male); red rump and upper tail; banded underparts.

Inland waters. Mantle and underbody grey; black cap; dark wings and tail; legs orange.

Bushveld. Dull olive-green above; white below; tail usually raised.

Forest fringes. Male and female have green upper parts with white spotted underparts.

Woodland. Deep iridescent blue; head green and blue; curved red bill; long tail.

Grassland. Top of head orange; rump pale orange; rest of upperparts metallic blue; below whitish, lightly streaked.
