Dense thickets. Rufous wings; black cap and tail; white underparts.

Moist grasslands. Folded upper wings dark olive-brown; head to breast grey; small white forehead; eyes yellow. Black-and-white underwings in flight.

Woodland. Red breast visible when bird is perched. Iridescent green on forehead.

Grasslands. Red or orange face; flight feathers, upper legs and tailtip black; legs pink.

Forest, bush. Streaky head, scaly throat with yellowish tinge; grey back with yellow bars on wings, paler underparts.

Coastal & Wetland. Very white appearance with dark black shoulder patch.

Coastal shores. White body apart from black cap, pale grey back and wings; long, slender black bill with yellow tip.

Inland wetlands. Massive red and black bill with yellow saddle diagnostic.

Estuaries. Small martin; above dark brown; below white with narrow brown chest-band; tail with shallow fork.

Grassland with bush. Eastern race with rufous crest and wings; body washed rufous; pale western race with rufous on wings only.
