Dry pans, short grass. Light brown above with rufous cap and pectoral tufts; whitish below.

Croplands. Red or pinkish bill on small, weaver-type bird; male has blackish face.

Dune forests, bushveld. Black head and breast; rufous upperparts; white bill and underparts.

Karoo, roadsides. Very dark brown with white underbelly and vent; eyes whitish; gape orange.

Dry grasslands. Legs dull yellow. Above dark grey-brown, mottled black with white streaks; head rufous, black and white; throat white; below rufous (paler in west) spotted and dappled red-brown.

Farmlands. Light brown above with purple wing-spots; light brown breast; underparts whitish; legs maroon-red

Grasslands. Above grey; wings with central black bars; broad black primaries. Chest grey; belly and underwings white, streaked rufous.

Moist grasslands valleys. Breeding male. Tail and red shoulder conspicuous.
