Description

Common resident. Forehead yellow or, in the highveld, orange. Pale-yellow underparts; cf. [Red-fronted Tinkerbird]. Immature has black forehead, sometimes with traces of yellow. The call is a monotonous ‘phoo-phoo-phoo-phoophoo…’ uttered for long periods on warm days. Also calls ‘dit-dit-dit’ rapidly. Occurs in a variety of woodland habitats, including riverine forests, mostly in the canopies of large trees. Greatly attracted to mistletoe-type parasites of the genera Viscum and Loranthus and may be abundant when these are plentiful.

Bird Family

Stout-billed, robust and often colourful relatives of the woodpeckers, with loud, characteristic calls. They feed on fruits and insects and excavate nest-holes in trees. The smaller species are called tinkerbirds from the likeness of their calls to the metallic sound of a hammer on an anvil. Immatures are duller than adults.
